Tomato Giant Tree (Solanum lycopersicum ‘Giant Tree’) is an impressive indeterminate tomato (SEVERAL MONTHS OF PICKING) variety known for its vigorous growth, towering height, and exceptionally large fruit. Sometimes referred to as “Giant Tree Tomato” or “Climbing Giant,” this heirloom originated in the United States and has been cultivated for its size and productivity since the early 20th century. It’s a favourite among tomato enthusiasts and competition growers for its sheer scale and reliable harvests.
Tomatoes themselves originated in western South America and were domesticated by the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures long before being introduced to Europe in the 1500s. While tomatoes were initially treated with suspicion in Europe, they soon became culinary staples across the globe. Traditionally, tomatoes have been used in folk medicine for digestive support, skin conditions, and general nourishment. Modern science recognises their health benefits due to high levels of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that supports heart health and may reduce inflammation.
Giant Tree Tomato plants are true climbers and can reach heights of 3 to 5 metres if properly supported. They grow with thick stems and lush, dark green foliage, producing clusters of large, round red tomatoes that can weigh up to 500 grams or more each. The fruit is smooth, meaty, and mildly sweet with few seeds, making it excellent for slicing, sandwiches, sauces, and fresh eating. The plant’s indeterminate nature means it will continue to grow and produce fruit over a long season, especially in warm climates.
To grow from seed, start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. In most parts of Australia, this means sowing seeds from July to September. Use seed trays filled with quality seed-raising mix and sow seeds 5 mm deep. Keep in a warm spot between 20–25°C with consistent moisture. Germination takes around 7–14 days. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger pots until ready to harden off and move outdoors.
Plant out in full sun once the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants at least 60 cm apart, preferably with strong support such as a tall trellis, fence, or sturdy tomato cage. Use compost-rich soil with good drainage and mulch well to retain moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser or compost tea every few weeks. Water at the base to prevent fungal issues and prune side shoots to encourage strong upward growth.
Tomato Giant Tree is a showstopper in any garden—ideal for those who love to grow something dramatic, productive, and full of flavour. With the right care and support, it rewards gardeners with towering plants and armloads of giant fruit well into the season!
