Veltheimia bracteata, commonly known as Forest Lily or Sand Lily, is a striking bulbous plant native to South Africa, where it grows naturally in shaded woodland and forest margins. It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant since the 18th century and is especially valued for its unusual winter and early spring flowers, which bring colour at a time when many gardens are quiet.

The plant produces broad, glossy, strap-like leaves that emerge from a large bulb and form an attractive rosette. In late winter to early spring, tall flower stems rise above the foliage, topped with dense clusters of tubular flowers in shades of pink, rose, or soft red with green-tipped ends. These flowers are long lasting and highly decorative, making Veltheimia a favourite for pots, shaded garden beds, and protected courtyards. The blooms also attract birds and pollinators in suitable climates.

Veltheimia bracteata grows best in mild, frost-free to lightly frosted climates and prefers part shade, particularly protection from hot afternoon sun. It enjoys well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once established. During summer, the plant may go partially dormant, especially in hotter regions, and should be watered sparingly at this time to prevent bulb rot. It performs exceptionally well in containers, which allows better control of moisture and placement. Grows well in WA but it is in shade with indirect light.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds in autumn or early winter using a free-draining seed raising mix.

Place seeds on the surface and lightly cover with a thin layer of soil.

Keep the soil moist but never wet and position trays in a sheltered, bright spot out of direct sun.

Germination usually occurs within two to four weeks.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant carefully into individual pots and grow them on until well established.

Seed-grown plants are slow to mature and may take three to five years to flower, but they develop into long-lived, rewarding specimens with proper care.
